Discover the Strength of IKO Shingles: A Nail Pull-Through Test

When it comes to roofing, durability and strength are essential. That’s why Advanced Roofing published this article with help from IKO Research. IKO has conducted rigorous testing to ensure our shingles withstand tough conditions. One key test we perform is the nail pull-through test. This measures the force needed to pull a roofing nail through a shingle, giving a clear idea of the shingle’s strength.

DuraRidge® Hip & Ridge Shingles: Advanced Technology for Exceptional Performance

What is the Nail Pull-Through Test?

The nail pull-through test is a critical assessment of a shingle’s durability. Here’s how it works:
• A roofing nail is driven through a shingle sample.
• Using a universal testing machine, the nail is pulled out from the other side.
• The test measures the amount of force needed to remove the nail, indicating the shingle’s strength.

Comparing Shingle Performance

In IKO’s recent test, we compared three different shingles:
1. Competitor’s Normal Laminated Shingle
2. Competitor’s Shingle with Nailing Reinforcement
3. IKO Dynasty Performance Shingle with Armor Zone Tape

Test Results

The results of the nail pull-through test were revealing:
• Competitor’s Normal Laminated Shingle: 27 pounds
• Competitor’s Shingle with Nailing Reinforcement: 56 pounds
• IKO Dynasty Performance Shingle: 82 pounds (monsoon resistant shingles)

60-70mph Arizona Monsoon Winds

The average wind speeds associated with monsoon conditions in Arizona typically range between approximately 60 to 70 miles per hour. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), high wind events such as these pose significant challenges to structural integrity and necessitate the use of durable roofing materials capable of withstanding such forces.

IKO Dynasty Shingles are engineered with features intended to enhance their resistance to high wind speeds, including reinforced nailing zones and a resilient design that complies with ASTM D7158 Class F wind resistance standards. These standards specify that roofing shingles must withstand wind speeds of at least 110 mph to meet Category 1 hurricane-force conditions. Therefore, IKO Dynasty Shingles are designed to resist wind forces significantly exceeding the typical monsoon wind speeds experienced in Arizona, providing enhanced protection against wind-related damage.

Why Choose IKO Dynasty Performance Shingles?

The IKO Dynasty Performance Shingle outperformed the competition, demonstrating superior strength and durability. Here’s why:
• Armor Zone Tape: This innovative feature provides excellent reinforcement, significantly increasing the shingle’s resistance to nail pull-through.
• Enhanced Durability: With a pull-through strength of 82 pounds, IKO shingles offer unmatched protection against harsh weather conditions.

When replacing a roof, consider the existing roofing material, building structure, and budget. Consult with a roofing contractor to determine the most suitable replacement option, such as shingle, tile, TPO, EPDM, polyurethan foam or modified bitumen, etc. Proper installation and adherence to building codes are crucial to ensure the longevity and performance of the new roof. The selection of appropriate roofing materials, such as polyurethane foam, TPO, rubber, modified bitumen, or metal, depends on factors such as durability, energy efficiency, and budget.
